1,000 Social Networks Worldwide (2/26/2008)
Europe Leading The Way in Professional Networks, but 51 Percent of All Social Networks Worldwide Are American.

This is only one of the results from “Social Networks Around The World: How is Web 2.0 Changing Your Daily Life?” the book in which An De Jonghe analyzes 1,000 social networks from all continents. (including Latin America)

In “Social Networks Around The World” the different online communities were split into 6 categories: business, friendship, dating, niche-, video & photo- and mobile networks.

Furthermore they were subdivided per region and per country, underlining the enormous differences between different cultures with regards to the use of social network tools. Niche communities are by far the most popular, followed by communities for friends.

Surprisingly, only 114 out of the 1,000 networks that were researched, are professional (such as TEN) by nature and half of those are based in Europe.
